ANCIENT GILDERDALES
1070 - William de Gildersdale
He appears in charters held in York Minster
1100 - Eleanor Gildehusdale
This seems to be the original spelling, and comes from the old Norse, meaning – from the place where the pub is! Eleanor appears in charters in Sutton under Whitestonecliffe – the village at the bottom of Sutton Bank between Helmsley and Thirsk in North Yorkshire.
1220 - William de Gildersdale (also Gildusdal)
Again in charters, this time concerning a parcel of land in Warter near Pocklington, East Yorkshire
1293 – Robert de Gilderdale
His accounts are held by the records office at York Minster. He came from Hull
1309/10 – Robert de Gilderdale
More accounts lodged in his name.
1320 – Robert de Gildersdale
More accounts but this time an ‘s’ has been added to his name
1332 – Geoffrey de Gildresdale
He came either from Cumbria (possibly Gilderdale Forest) or Warter
1530 - Eleanor Gildehusdale
She crops up again, so either a descendant or this relates to the previous charter.
With one possible exception, all the traceable ancestors seem to be Yorkshire born and bred. Bizarrely, my parents now live near Helmsley in North Yorkshire, where there is a ‘Gilderdale Beck’ on the old maps.
My research shows the family coming from the Hull area (Goole, Thorne and Howden) in the early years of the 1700’s – so it doesn’t appear that we were great travellers over the previous 500 years.
